Rickey Ervin Akins, 65 of Athens, our much-loved son, father, brother, uncle and friend, went to be with his Lord after a short but brave battle against cancer on December 12, 2025, surrounded by his family. An outdoorsman through and through, Rickey could often be seen around his farm gardening, driving his tractor, or tending to his cows. He also loved hunting, fishing, and sports, especially baseball. He was an excellent cook. A hard worker, he had recently retired after over 45 years of service at Adient.
Rickey is survived by his mother, Reba Sue Akins, to whom he was especially close; sons, Stacey and Matthew Akins; sisters Pam Cathey (Tim), Kathy Fugate (Beauford), and Shawna Akins-Crowe; nephews Taylor (Shelby), Tanner (Lynsey), Trevor, and Nathan (Ashley); nieces Andrea, Amanda, Jennifer, Cayci (Michael), and Jessica (Joe); several grandnieces and nephews, special friend and neighbor Larry Rowland, and many others. Preceding him in death were his wife, Mary Annette Akins; his beloved father and best friend, Mason ‘Mutt’ Ervin Akins; grandparents Robert and Eula Mae Eaton; and grandparents Bruner and Nola Akins.
A visitation for Rickey will take place at Poole Funeral Home in Etowah on Tuesday, December 16th, from 5 to 7 P.M. His funeral service will follow. On Wednesday December 17th, a graveside procession and service will begin at 9:45 A.M. at Poole Funeral Home, ending at Jones Chapel Cemetery.
